Today John’s maternal grandfather, John Thomas Hicks, would’ve been 114. John is named after his grandfather that he never met.


21 NOV 1908 - Born in San Augustine, San Augustine, TX to William Edgar Hicks, age 33 and Bertha America Neyland Hicks, age 26. He was the fourth of ten children. Older siblings were Ella Faye, Mae Elizabeth and Richard Jewel.

John Hicks Dies In Jacksonville 

JACKSONVILLE, Jan. 27 (Spl) 

John T. Hicks, 49, vice president of the Beall Brothers Dry Goods Chain, died at his home here Monday. Funeral services will be held in the First Methodist Church Tuesday at 3 p.m. Burial will be under the direction of Gragard-Spraggins-Swofford Funeral Home. Hicks began his drygoods career as a salesman for the same firm in its San Augustine store in 1928. became manager there two years later, and was manager successively in Gilmer and Henderson before coming to the firm's general offices in Jacksonville in 1936 as a buyer. Since 1945, Hicks had been a vice-president director and director of merchandising. Hicks was a First Methodist Church member here and had been a steward of the church. Surviving are his widow's; daughters, Misses Jeanne Hicks and Joanne Hicks; parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. E. Hicks, San Augustine; brothers, Dr. Jewel Hicks of San Augustine, Robert E. Hicks of Denver, Carl Hicks of Houston, Leon Hicks of Port Arthur; sisters. Mrs. Russell Weaver of Mason City, Iowa, and Mrs. Thera Dutchman of Orange.
