On January 22, my maternal 3rd great-grandfather, John D. Quillin, would’ve been 210.

22 JAN 1813 - Born in Scott County, VA to James, age 37 and Martha Evans Quillin, who was 36. He was the seventh of ten children. His older siblings were William, Charles, Greenbury B., Ezekiel, James C. and Elisha.

20 JAN 1842 - Married Loucinda/Lucinda Cox [Scott County, VA] when he was 28 and she was 24.

15 DEC 1854 - Birth of daughter, Ora Emma [Estillville, Scott, VA]. This was my maternal 2nd great-grandmother.

13 JAN 1857 - Death of mother, Martha, in Big Moccasin Creek, VA, at the age of 80.

17 SEP 1858 - Death of brother, James C. [Hallsville, Harrison, TX].

19 SEP 1856 - Death of sister, Eliza Ann [Clinchport, Scott, VA].

28 OCT 1858 - Birth of son, Robert Steele, [Estillville, Scott, VA].


1860 - Residence - Post office: Estillville, Scott, VA.



6 NOV 1862 - Birth of daughter, Jeff “Anna,” [Scott County, VA]. I have found various dates for her birth so there is a mistake somewhere. The Quillen book states that she was born in 1861. Find A Grave has 6 NOV 1852, which is probably a typo and her head stone says 6 NOV 1862. Since she is not on the 1860 census I can rule out the 1852 date as a typo. The 1870 census, taken in August of 1870 states she was 7 at that time so that is the age she would be if born in 1862.


7 SEP 1867 - Donated land to build Antioch Church. The Quillin clan holds a reunion there each year.

9 NOV 1891 - Passed away at the age of 78 [Scott County, VA]. They had been married for 49 years.

Woodville Woodville is where the Hicks family held a reunion for many years. SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
