Happy 156th birthday to my paternal great-grandfather, Andrew Crawford Owens.


31 DEC 1866 - Born in Cedar Bluff, Clay, AL, to Andrew Thomas Owens, age 29, and Martha Louisiana Raines, age 24. He was the fourth of eleven children. His older siblings were Lora Ulala, Lille Leota and Marcus Cleveland.



22 DEC 1888 - Birth of sister, Romie Ophelia [Hunt County, TX].


16 JUN 1891 - Birth of brother, Cicero Taylor [Merit, Hunt, TX].


1893 - Moved to TX.


15 JUN 1893 - Birth of brother, Hoyt Lafayette [Merit, Hunt, TX].


16 JUN 1895 - Birth of son, Henry Grady [TX].


24 NOV 1899 - Birth of son, Raymond Watt  [Hunt County, TX].

1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 5, Hunt, TX.



22 MAR 1903 - Birth of sister, Hinda Agnes [Hunt County, TX].

22 DEC 1907 - Married Hettie Lou Goodwin in Scatterbranch Community, Hunt, TX, in a buggy, in the rain. She was 19 and he was 20.



22 SEP 1908 - Birth of son, Rayford Morris [Hunt County, TX].


4 MAY 1910 - Birth of son, Cecil Robert [Commerce, Hunt, TX].

1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 6, Hunt, TX.



2 OCT 1911 - Birth of son, Wayne Denton [Hunt County, TX]. This is my grandfather.

16 DEC 1918 - Birth of son, Paul James [TX].

15 AUG 1920 - Death of son, Paul James at one year old from either pneumonia or diphtheria [TX].

1920 - Residence - Commerce, Hunt, TX.



15 APR 1921 - Birth of son, Thomas Ralph [Commerce, Hunt, TX].

9 OCT 1923 - Birth of daughter, Ruth Isabel [Hunt County, TX].


Moved to the Texas panhandle. Roberta Drews contributed the following information in blue.


“What I heard was that they moved from Scatterbranch (near Commerce, TX) to west Texas because land was more available. Cecil was the only son who stayed behind and he ended up with a farm that had been in the Owens family). The rest moved out to west Texas with some livestock, horses and wagon carrying their belongings. 


They stopped in Abernathy because one of A.C.s brothers had a store (jewelry?) where Carl was born.” 


8 SEP 1926 - Birth of son, Carl Gene [Abernathy, Hale, TX].


“They found land outside Tulia (four or five miles north of town) and that’s where Ralph, Ruth and Carl grew up and went to elementary school at Kaffir.” 



12 DEC 1929 - Death of mother, Martha, passed away at the age of 67 in Commerce, Hunt, TX.

1930 - Residence - Precinct 1, Swisher, TX.



12 AUG 1935 - Death of father, Andrew, at the age of 78 in Dallas, Dallas, TX.

1943 - Moved to South West City, MO. 


“When Ruth was in college Rayford had moved to South West City, MO area and A.C. decided that land/opportunity was better there and decided to follow. Wayne went too but I’m not sure whether he went earlier with Rayford or later with AC. Ruth was in college then.” 


5 FEB 1945 - His wife, Hettie Lou, passed away in South West City, McDonald, MO, when she was 56 years old from coronary occlusion. They had been married 37 years.


1946 - Moved to Huntington Park, CA.


“After Hettie Lou died, A.C. went to California where he married and divorced Maud and then married Alta who died fairly soon after the marriage. 


A.C. was really hurt because Alta’s children wanted her buried next to their father without his name on her tombstone. A.C. lived in Huntington Beach, CA until around 1959.” 


17 AUG 1950 - Married Maude Vivian Lewis Saxon in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA when he was 63 and she was 55.

1950 - Residence - I haven’t been able to locate him on the census.

19 OCT 1958 - Married Alta Maria Parker [Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA].


30 APR 1959 - Death of wife, Alta [Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA].

31 JAN 1964 - Passed away from massive atelectasis, both lungs and massive bronchopneumonia, both lungs in Plainview, Hale, TX at the age of 77.

Woodville Woodville is where the Hicks family held a reunion for many years. SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
