MARY SAMANTHA REESE WINDELL 1866 - 1910

Today my paternal 2nd great-grandmother, Mary “Samantha” Reese Windell, would have been 156.


This one has been a little confusing and I’m not sure that some of the information is correct. I’ll need to go to Kaufman to see if I can confirm some of the family.


4 OCT 1866 - Born in Kaufman, Kaufman, TX to Francis Frank Jefferson Reese, age 35 and Mary Ann Tudor Reese, who was 32. She was the seventh of ten children.


On the 1900 census, her mother reported that nine of her ten children were living. I have found ten names but can’t verify them all. I am confident that these were her older siblings: William, Margaret “Maggie” Jane, Furney O. and Samuel F. 


Someone on FamilySearch has listed a George Henderson born in 1863 that passed away in 1867 but there are no sources to verify this. There is a Charles Henderson born in 1864 that could be the same person but then I can’t find ten children born to Mary. It also appears, according to the 1880 census, that Mary Samantha had a twin sister named Martha. I haven’t been able to locate any other documents that back this up. On the 1870 census it only list Samantha at age 4 with no sister that age so I’m wondering if the census enumerator wrote the wrong age for Martha since I have found documentation for a sister, Martha, that was born in 1872 but she isn’t listed on the 1880 census as age 8 or 9.

18 SEP 1889 - Married William Hess Windell [Kaufman, Kaufman, TX] when she was 22 and he was 24. 


8 AUG 1890 - Birth of daughter, Mary “Minnie” Minerva [Kaufman County, TX].


20 JUL 1890 - Birth of daughter, Margaret Lorene [Crossland, TX]. This is my paternal great-grandmother.


5 JUL 1895 - Birth of son, William “Bill” Hubert [TX].


11 NOV 1897 - Birth of daughter, Edith [Deport, Lamar, TX].


1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 7, Lamar, TX.



Abt 1901 - Birth of daughter, Grace “Linnie” May [Red River County, TX].


11 JAN 1903 - Birth of son, John Samuel [Deport, Lamar, TX].


20 JAN 1903 - Death of father, Francis Frank Jefferson [Comanche, Comanche, TX] at the age of 71.


10 JAN 1905 - Birth of son, Charles Hess [Deport, Lamar, TX].


14 MAR 1906 - Death of mother, Mary Ann, at the age of 71 [Comanche, Comanche, TX].


1910 -Residence - Justice Precinct 3, Red River, TX.



20 AUG 1910 - Passed away at the age of 43 [TX]. They had been married 20 years.


Burial - Deport Cemetery [Deport, Lamar, TX].

SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling.
