Happy 156th birthday to John’s maternal 2nd great-grandmother, Martha “Mattie” Jane Callaway Bogan.


6 OCT 1866 - Born in Talladega County, AL and was also known as Mattie. Parents were James Anderson Callaway Jr., who was 24 and Sarah Elizabeth Malone Callaway who was 17.


1867 - Family moved to Wood County, TX. During the trip Sarah passed away.

29 JUN 1884 - Married Jacob Washington “Wash” Bogan in Quitman, Wood, TX when he was 26 and she was 17.

30 APR 1885 - Birth of son, Augustus Tolbert [Mineola, Wood, TX]. This was John’s great-grandfather.


16 MAY 1887 - Birth of son Mabry V. [TX].


26 OCT 1888 - Death of son Mabry V. [Mineola, Wood, TX] at the age of 1.


14 JAN 1890 - Birth of daughter, Charlie Fay [TX].


19 JUN 1891 - Passed away at the age of 24 [Mineola, Wood, TX].


Burial - Cedars Memorial Gardens, Mineola, Wood County, TX.

Woodville Woodville is where the Hicks family held a reunion for many years. Located about an hour from Lufkin, it is located deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas at the crossroads of three U.S. highways: U.S. Highway 69, U.S. Highway 190, and U.S. 287. It is the Dogwood Capital of Texas. SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
