RUDOLPH "RUDY" FRANK CHLASTAK 1881 - 1963

My maternal great-grandfather, Rudolph “Rudy” Frank Chlastak was born to Frantisek Chlastak, age 32 and Marie Skilecky, age 25 in Shiner, Lavaca, TX. He was the second of five children. I think he had an older sister, Mary, born in 1887.

Since both parents died when the children were young, I've had a hard time locating them until they were adults as I think others took them in to raise them.

15 OCT 1894 - Birth of sister, Annie Minnie [Shiner, Lavaca, TX].


3 APR 1898 - Birth of sister, Julia Florence [Shiner, Lavaca, TX].

10 AUG 1904 - Birth of brother, Joseph Francis [Shiner, Lavaca, TX].


21 DEC 1904 - Death of mother, Marie, at the age of 38 [Shiner, Lavaca, TX]. To read her story, refer back to this blog post.


25 OCT 1907 - Death of father, Frantisek, at the age of 49 [Shiner, Lavaca, TX].


1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 6, Lavaca, TX.



5 NOV 1912 - Marriage license obtained

I believe this is taken inside the Palace of Sweets. My great-grandmother, Mille, is behind the counter and that is my grandfather, Rudy sitting at a table. I’m not sure who the young girl is. It doesn’t look like my great aunt Lorraine.

18 FEB 1940 - Married Lorna Magdaline King in Houston, TX, when he was 48 and she was 37.




20 SEP 1947 - Death of brother, Joseph Francis [Victoria, Victoria, TX]. Notice it mentions their siblings but Mary passed first and they didn't add information about those who preceded him in death.



1950 - Residence - Houston, Harris, TX. This is exciting as this is the first person I’ve found in the newly released 1950 Census!!!



1951 - Residence - 7514 Fir, Houston, Harris, TX. When I was between the ages of 1 and 4 we lived in this house.



1958 - Residence - 7514 Fir, Houston, Harris, TX.


02 MAR 1963 - Passed away at the age of 71 from dissecting aneurysm of the aorta and atherosclerosis of the aorta in Houston, Harris, TX. He was a salesman for Lone Star Meat Packing Company.

SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
