MARIE SKILECKY CHLASTAK 1866 - 1904

Today my maternal 2nd great-grandmother, Marie Skilecky Chlastak, would have been 156 years old. Marie’s story is sad. I hate to start with this but this is what I have uncovered.


I am not sure what the correct spelling of her maiden name is since all the documentation shows a different spelling. Here are all the different names I’ve documented: Marie Skalitzky, Mary Skalicky, Marianne Skalicky, Mary Skialecky, Mary Skilecky, Mary Skialocky and Marie Chlastak.


She was born January 1, 1866. Her son’s obituary, please see below, said she was from Chicago, IL. I think her father was Frank Skalitzky and I have been unable to figure out who her mother was. Without this information I haven’t been able to document any siblings either. Here is a timeline of her life.


25 JAN 1887, when she was 21 years old, she married Frantisek Chlastak, aka Franz or Frank, in Columbus, Colorado, TX.


ABT 1887 - Birth of daughter, Mary [TX]. *⚠️

4 APR 1891 - Birth of son, Rudolph (Rudy) Frank [Shiner, Lavaca, TX] My great-grandfather.

15 OCT 1894 - Birth of daughter, Annie Minnie [Shiner, Lavaca, TX].

3 APR 1898 - Birth of daughter, Julia Florence [Shiner, Lavaca, TX].

10 AUG 1904 - Birth of son, Joseph Francis [Shiner, Lavaca, TX].

21 NOV 1904 - Passed away in Shiner, Lavaca, TX at the age of 38. Area newspapers reported the following tragic circumstances:

I’m unsure why her tombstone says that her date of death is December 21 since the newspaper articles are published in November.


There is more to this story you’ll see when I post about her husband, Frank. He too had a tragic end and it looks like there was speculation that he might have been involved in Marie’s death.

SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
