WILLIAM EDGAR HICKS 1875 - 1963

Today John's maternal great-grandfather, William Edgar Hicks, would have been 147.

Before I share about William Edgar Hicks I have an interesting story to tell. 

A few weeks ago when I was working on the blog I said out loud to John that I wished we knew relatives from the Hicks side of the family. All his immediate family has passed away and we really don’t have any photos from this side of the family. I kid you not, about an hour later, a page that I follow on Facebook, East Texas History, had this post:



The location, Town Bluff, caught my eye as this is where William Edger Hicks was born and I know that several others were from there. I commented on this post and told Janis I think that her and John might be related. Come to find out she is his 3rd cousin 1x removed!!! She told me that a man named Dr. Peter Bundgard from MS has done extensive genealogy for William Jackson Hicks and Sarah Rivers Hicks. She has given me his information to contact him because there is a CD with hundreds of photos!!! 


I have reached out to him but haven’t heard from him yet. Janis said that he goes on a month-long hike in the summer so I hope to hear from him soon.


William Lewis Hicks, pictured in the post above, is William Edger Hicks uncle. She shared some photos with me that I have included below.


Another interesting twist is that two days later I was having lunch with my cousin, Tim and his wife, Julie. I was telling her about this and showed her the post. She tells me that she has family in Spurger and from other areas that the Hicks are from. Perhaps John and Julie are related but I haven’t found a connection yet. Of course I’ll post my findings here.


Now on to William Edger Hicks.


When William Edgar Hicks  was born on July 22, 1875, in Town Bluff, Tyler, Texas, his father, John Thomas Hicks, was 23 and his mother, Elizabeth Ann Abigail (Eliza), was 20. He was the second of 12 children. His sister, Oma Olivia was born in 1873.


He was a dentist and several brothers were dentists as well. They have been marked with an asterisk.

27 JAN 1958 - Death of son, John Thomas, at the age of 49 [Jacksonville, Cherokee, TX]. This was John's grandfather and he is named after him.


13 APR 1960 - Death of brother, Charles Joseph [McKinney, Collin, TX].


8 AUG 1963 - Passed away at the age of 88 from cerebral vascular accident and arteriosclerosis [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX]. They had been married 61 years.

I love that someone has put names to their faces! I have highlighted William Edgar and Bertha above. I just did Bertha’s blog but didn’t realize that I had a picture of her until right now.



I wished this photo had names but I would imagine that William Edgar and Bertha are here somewhere.

SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling.
