Today my paternal great-grandmother, Margaret Lorene Windell Smith, would have been 130.

20 JUL 1892 - Born in Crossland, Texas to William Hess Windell who was 27 and Samantha Reese Windell who was 25. She was the second of seven children. Her older sister was Mary Minerva.


5 JUL 1895 - Birth of brother, William Hubert “Bill” [TX].


11 NOV 1897 - Birth of sister, Edith [Deport, Lamar, TX].


1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 7, Lamar, TX.



Abt 1901 - Birth of sister, Grace May “Linnie” [Red River Co., TX].


11 JAN 1903 - Birth of brother, John Samuel [Deport, Lamar, TX].


10 JAN 1905 - Birth of brother, Charles Hess [Deport, Lamar, TX].


1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 3, Red River, TX.



20 AUG 1910 - Her mother, Mary Samantha Reese Windell, passed away at the age of 43. 


5 OCT 1912 - Her father, William Hess Windell, passed away in Deport, Lamar, TX at the age of 47.


24 NOV 1912 - Married Randolph Dee Smith, in Red River, TX when they were both 20 years old.


31 OCT 1914 - Birth of daughter, Kathryne Viola [Bagwell, Red River, TX]. This was my paternal grandmother.


3 MAY 1916 - Birth of son, Guy Austin [Red River, TX].


28 OCT 1918 - Birth of son, Raymond Lynn [Detroit, Red River, TX].


1920 - Residence - Justice Precinct 3, Red River, TX.



27 Dec 1921 - Passed away at the age of 29 [Deport, Lamar, TX]. I am unsure of what caused her early death. They had been married nine years.


Burial - Deport Cemetery [Deport, Lamar, TX].

Woodville Woodville is where the Hicks family held a reunion for many years. Located about an hour from Lufkin, it is located deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas at the crossroads of three U.S. highways: U.S. Highway 69, U.S. Highway 190, and U.S. 287. SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
