Today my paternal 2nd great-grandfather, William Hess Windell, would have been 157 years old.


8 JUN 1865 - Born in Harrison, Harrison, IN to William Windell who was 42 and Elizabeth Long Windell who was 40. He was the ninth of nine children. His older siblings were Anthony, Robert, Mary Katherine, James, Laura J., John L. and George Washington.


1870 - Residence - Washington Township, [Post office: Mauckport] Harrison, IN.

18 SEP 1889 - Married Mary Samantha Reese [Kaufman, TX].


8 AUG 1890 - Birth of daughter, Mary Minerva “Minnie” [Kaufman Co, TX].


17 JUN 1891 - Mother, Elizabeth, passed away at the age of 66 [Harrison, IN].


20 JUL 1890 - Birth of daughter, Margaret Lorene [Crossland, TX]. This is my paternal great-grandmother.


5 JAN 1894 - Death of sister, Laura J. [Georgetown, Floyd, IN].


5 JUL 1895 - Birth of son, William Hubert “Bill” [TX].


1895 - Death of brother, Robert [Mauckport, Harrison County, IN].


11 NOV 1897 - Birth of daughter, Edith [Deport, Lamar, TX].


31 JUL 1899 - Death of sister, Mary Katherine [Columbus, Cherokee Co, KS].


25 DEC 1899 - Death of brother, Anthony [Harrison, IN].


1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 7, Lamar, TX.



Abt 1901 - Birth of daughter, Grace May “Linnie” [Red River Co., TX].


11 JAN 1903 - Birth of son, John Samuel [Deport, Lamar, TX].


10 JAN 1905 - Birth of son, Charles Hess [Deport, Lamar, TX].


1 JUL 1905 - Death of father, William, at the age of 82 [Harrison, IN].


1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 3, Red River, TX.



20 AUG 1910 - His wife, Mary Samantha, passed away at the age of 43. They had been married 20 years.


5 OCT 1912 - Passed away in Deport, Lamar, TX at the age of 47.


Burial - Deport Cemetery [Deport, Lamar, TX].

Woodville Woodville is where the Hicks family held a reunion for many years. Located about an hour from Lufkin, it is located deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas at the crossroads of three U.S. highways: U.S. Highway 69, U.S. Highway 190, and U.S. 287. SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling.
