MARTHA LOUISIANA RAINES OWENS 1862 - 1929

160 years ago, my 2nd paternal great-grandmother was born on 19 JUN 1862 in Cedar Bluff, AL. I haven’t been able to verify her parents and siblings. I thought it might be James Deason Faulkenberry and Eliza Ann Nettles but the following death certificates of her children [Lora, Hoyt, Henry and Andrew] all list Martha Raines/Raynes as their mother.

On our Facebook Group for the Owens family the following information has been discussed.


Cindi Owens Argumaniz:  “When Daddy [Carl Owens] started trying to get information back in the '60s he found that Martha Louisiana Raines had been married and widowed before she married Andrew Thomas Owens. Stuff like that also provides "challenges." 


My thought on this was that she was 15 when she married Andrew Thomas so if she was married before that she was very young. I know that did happen but I haven’t found the proof yet.


Roberta Drews: “In Joyce Owens Gabriel’s family history, she includes a letter from Naomi Owens Trammell that says, “It is true that Grandma (Martha Louisiana Raines) was part Native American. Chris and I believe it was on her father’s side.” Naomi was (is?) the daughter of Henry Grady Owens.”


17 MAR 1878 - married Andrew Thomas Owens in Cedar Bluff, Alabama, when he was 21 years old and she was 15.



28 FEB 1880 - Birth of daughter, Lora Ulala was born on [AL].

1880 - Residence - Cherokee, Alabama, in 1880.



03 JUL 1882 - Birth of daughter, Lillie Leota [AL].


9 AUG 1884 - Birth of son, Marcus Cleveland [AL].

31 DEC 1886 - Birth of son, Andrew Crawford [Cedar Bluff, AL]. This is my great-grandfather.


DEC 1887 - Possible birth of a son named Rance. 


22 DEC 1888 - Birth of daughter, Romie Ophelia [Hunt, TX].


16 JUN 1891 - Birth of son, Cicero Taylor [Merit, Hunt, TX].


15 JUN 1893 - Birth of son, Hoyt Lafayette [Merit, Hunt County, TX].


JUN 1894 - Birth of son, Henry Grady [TX].


24 NOV 1899 - Birth of son, Raymond W [Hunt, TX].

1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 5, Hunt, TX. This census lists that she had given birth to 11 children and 9 were living.



22 MAR 1903 - Birth of daughter, Hinda Agnes [Hunt, TX].

1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 6, Hunt, TX. This census lists that she had given birth to 12 children and 10 were living.



1920 - Residence - Commerce, Hunt, TX.



12 DEC 1929 - Passed away at the age of 67 from apoplexy. They had been married 51 years.


Burial - Rosemound Cemetery, Commerce, Hunt County, TX.

SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
