JACOB WASHINGTON BOGAN 1858 - 1957

Today, John's maternal 2nd great-grandfather, Jacob Washington "Wash" Bogan, would have been 164 years old.

9 MAY 1858 - Born in Cedar Bluff, AL to Henry Shadrack Bogan, who was 33 and Amanda “Mandy” Horn Hoss, was 24 when he was born. He was the 5th of 11 children. In a written family history, https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/collection/1030/tree/169287930/person/362281616233/media/e805bcca-748a-43c9-b845-6eed37fdb9a7?_phsrc=PdJ3&usePUBJs=true&sort=-created, it states that they had 11 children. The first child, Edward, died at birth on 9 OCT 1851, Alice Alvaretta was born on 4 SEP 1852, Ellen Adeline on 19 JUN 1853 and William Patrick on 29 APR 1855 were born before Jacob.

I also found this site, http://www.kfgeorgia.net/genealogy/showmedia.php?mediaID=177&medialinkID=768 in which Margaret Bogan Bray and Carolyn Pirkle [pages 43-45] contributed the information so I feel that what they compiled is correct since Margaret's daughter, Peggy Bray Mallory, has told me that her mother had done research. Of course this was done in 1988 and the site lists their sources but with new sources that have become available I’m wondering if there are some minor discrepancies since some of the census records list different information but the census records are not always accurate either.

24 JUN 1864 - Birth of brother James Henry [Cedar Bluff, Cherokee, AL].


25 AUG 1868 - Birth of sister, Isabella Horn [Cedar Bluff, Cherokee, AL].


1870 - Residence - Township 9 Range 9, Blue Pond, Cherokee, AL.



12 AUG 1872 - Birth of brother, Charles (Charley) Ross [Cedar Bluff, Cherokee, AL].


19 FEB 1874 - Birth of brother, Walter Lee [Cedar Bluff, Cherokee, AL].


1880 - Residence - Cherokee, AL.



11 MAR 1881 - Death of sister, Alice Alvaretta [Cherokee County, AL] at the age of 28.


29 JUN 1884 - Married Martha Jane “Mattie” Callaway in Quitman, Wood, TX when he was 26 and she was 17.

30 APR 1885 - Birth of son, Augustus Tolbert [Mineola, Wood, TX]. This is John's paternal great-grandfather.


16 MAY 1887 - Birth of son Mabry V. [TX].


26 OCT 1888 - Death of son Mabry V. [Mineola, Wood, TX] at the age of 1.


14 JAN 1890 - Birth of daughter, Charlie Fay [TX].


19 JUN 1891 - Death of wife, Martha Jane “Mattie” [Mineola, Wood, TX] at the age of 24. I am not sure what the cause of her death is.


1893 - Married Mary Lucinda Tatum in Wood, TX at the age of 35. Mary was 20 years old.

5 JAN 1894 - Birth of son, Patrick Henry [Mineola, Wood, TX].


17 OCT 1895 - Birth of son, Thomas Edward [Mineola, Wood, TX].


1900 - Residence - Mineola, Wood, TX.



05 NOV 1900 • Birth of daughter Clara Horn [Mineola, Wood, TX].

13 JAN 1901 - Death of wife, Mary Lucinda at the age of 27. They had been married 8 years. I cannot find her cause of death either at this time.


1910 - Death of brother, James Henry [Yell County, AK] at the age of 46.


1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 2, Wood, TX.



06 JUL 1910 - Death of brother, Walter Lee [Kaufman, TX] at the age of 36.


17 JUL 1912 - Death of brother, William Patrick [Russellville, Pope, AK] at the age of 57.


12 DEC 1916 - Death of father, Henry Shadrack Bogan [Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, OK] at the age of 92.


1920 - Residence - Mineola, Wood, TX.



24 JAN 1923 - Death of mother, Amanda Horn "Mandy" [WA] at the age of 89.


1930 - Residence - Mineola, Wood, TX.



18 AUG 1935 - Death of sister, Ellen Adeline [Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, OK] at the age of 82. Findagrave listed her middle name as Adelier. Could be a misspelling.


1935 - Lived in Mineola, Wood, TX.


14 JUN 1936 - Death of sister, Sarah Eugenia [Zenith, King, WA] at the age of 75.


19 SEP 1936 • Death of son, Augustus Tolbert [Mineola, Wood, TX] at the age of 51.


1940 - Residence - Justice Precinct No 2, Mineola, Wood, TX.



17 Dec 1944 - Death of brother, Charles (Charley) Ross [Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, OK] at the age of 72.


1950 - Residence - Mineola, Wood, TX.



25 May 1957 - Death of son, Thomas Edward [Wichita Falls, Wichita, TX] at the age of 61.



18 OCT 1957 - Passed away from bronchial (hypostatic) pneumonia due to senility in Tyler, Smith, TX at the age of 99.

SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling. I rarely see it spelled this way. 30 OCT 1914 - Born in Bagwell, Red River, TX to Randolph Dee Smith and Margaret Lorene Windell Smith , who were both 22. She was the first of three children.
