John’s maternal great, great-grandfather, John Thomas Hicks, was born to William Jackson Hicks and Sarah Ann Rivers. He was the second of six children. His older brother's name was William Lewis.
John’s maternal grandfather was also named John Thomas Hicks aka J.T. Hicks. John is named after him.

According to Laura Victoria Hicks Collier descendant Anne Chappel (as well as by other family history documentation), William Jackson Hicks died in battle and is actually buried somewhere in an unmarked grave, most likely somewhere in Georgia. A number of family artifacts were apparently given to the only female descendant of William Jackson Hicks and Sarah Rivers Hicks, of which Anne Chappell is the current custodian. Descendants of William Jackson Hicks placed a tombstone marker next to the grave of his wife in Town Bluff Cemetery about 1999. This stone marker does NOT indicate that he is buried there.

Obituary from the Lufkin Daily News: J. T. HICKS DIES SUDDENLY TODAY - Though He Had Been Ill, His Death Was Not Expected. Interment on Tuesday.
J. T. Hicks, highly revered resident of South Lufkin, died rather suddenly at his home Monday morning at 9:10 o'clock. Though Mr. Hicks has been ill for a long time, his death so suddenly was a painful surprise to his friends.
As stated above, Mr. Hicks has been ill for a considerable time at his home in the city and at one time his life was almost despaired of. But it was thought he was improving at this time.
Deceased had been a resident of Lufkin several years. Only within the past few months had he and Mrs. Hicks celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, at which time the children gathered under the home roof.
Interment is to be in Glendale Cemetery, likely at some time Tuesday, though the exact hour had not been announced when The News went to press. Surviving this good citizen are his widow and the following children: Mrs. J. T. Hamilton, Town Bluff, Tex; Dr. W. E. Hicks, San Augustine; T. C. Hicks, Town Bluff; Dr. J. L. Hicks, Conroe; Dr. C. J. Hicks, Plano; Mrs. J. C. Brannon, Lufkin; J. L. Hicks, Lufkin; V. T. Hicks, Beaumont; and Mrs. J. A. Talbert, Lufkin. One sister, Mrs. Laura Collier, of Easteline (sic), Texas, and one brother, C. C. Hicks, of Lufkin also survive.
Also from the Lufkin Daily News: FUNERAL TO BE TODAY IN GLENDALE CEMETERY -- J. T. Hicks Will be Interred at 3 O'clock -- Death Came Early Monday Morning
The funeral services of the late J. T. Hicks, who expired at his home at 414 Homer Boulevard in this city Monday morning at 9:10 o'clock, was to be held Tuesday afternoon at the family residence. Interment will follow in Glendale cemetery at Lufkin. Mr. Hicks was born in the state of Georgia on March 30, 1852. He would have attained his 71st birthday on the 30th day of this month.
Mr. Hicks rather unexpected death followed a lengthy illness from which the patient seemed to be showing improvement. Highly respected and regarded in the most exalted esteem by his friends and neighbors, Mr. Hicks goes to his eternal reward on high.
