ORA EMMA QUILLIN 1854 - 1937

Happy 168th birthday to my maternal 2nd great-grandmother, Ora Emma Quillin Kinser. 


I’ve always been fascinated with the Quillin branch of the family. When I was young, my grandmother had a book entitled “The Quillin (MacQuillin) Family” By Claude MacQuillin. At the beginning of the book there is a picture of Dunluce Castle located in Ireland. She said I could go and claim the castle.

15 DEC 1854 - Born in Estillville, Scott, VA to John D. Quillin, age 41 and Lucinda L. Cocks Quillin, who was 37. She was the seventh of nine children. Her older siblings were James Melvin, Teresa Ann, Sarah Elizabeth, Martha Washington, Mary Hedges and Adolphus H.


James, Teresa and Sarah all passed away as small children before Ora was born.

1860 - Residence - Post office: Estillville, Scott, VA.



6 NOV 1862 - Birth of sister, Jeff Anna, [Scott County, VA]. I have found various dates for her birth so there is a mistake somewhere. The Quillen book states this date. Find A Grave has 6 NOV 1852, which is probably a typo and her head stone says 6 NOV 1862. Since she is not on the 1860 census I can rule out the 1852 date as a typo. The 1870 census, taken in August of 1870 states she was 7 at that time so that is the age she would be if born in 1862.

9 JAN 1875 - Death of sister, Mary Hedges [VA].


1880 - Residence - Post office: Estillville, Scott, VA.



23 MAY 1881 - Married John Levi Kinser in Scott County, VA when she was 26 and he was 22.



23 FEB 1882 - Birth of daughter, Mary Lucy, [Estillville, Scott, VA].


26 APR 1884 - Birth of son, Charles Quillen, [Estillville, Scott, VA].


12 JUN 1888 - Birth of daughter, Myrtle B., [Gate City, Scott, VA].


20 JUL 1891 - Birth of son, John Chester, [Gate City, Scott, VA]. This is my great-grandfather.


9 NOV 1891 - Death of father, John D., at the age of 78 [Scott County, VA].


12 OCT 1895 - Birth of son, Elgin Hunter, [Bristol, Bristol City, VA].


3 MAY 1897 - Death of mother, Lucinda L., at the age of 79 [Scott, County, VA].


1900 - Residence - Bristol Ward 1, Bristol City, VA.



1 JAN 1910 - Death of sister, Jeff Anna [Gate City, Scott, VA].

1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 1, Harris, TX.

20 MAY 1917 - Death of brother, Adolphus H. [Scott County, VA]. Find A Grave states 1918 but his death certificate says 1917.

1920 - Residence - Houston Ward 4, Harris, TX.

1924 - Death of son, Charles [?].

21 JUL 1930 - Death of sister, Martha Washington [Scott County, VA].

1930 - Residence - Houston, Harris, TX.

14 JAN 1937 - Passed away at the age of 82 in Houston, Harris, TX, from lobar pneumonia and senile debility and arteriosclerosis. She had been bed ridden the past two years.
