Happy 168th birthday to John’s maternal 2nd great-grandmother Elizabeth “Eliza” Abigail Ratcliff Hicks.

18 OCT 1854 - Born in Beech Creek Community, Tyler, TX to William Richard Ratcliff Jr., age 22 and Lucy Blanche Collier, age 20. She was known as Eliza. She was the oldest of twelve children.

3 JUN 1856 - Birth of brother, Charles “Charlie” Edward [Tyler, Smith, TX].

6 JUL 1857 - Birth of sister, Alice Olivia [Post Office: Woodville, Tyler, TX]. Her tombstone states the 6 JUL 1856 date but Janis Rae Hicks Richter helped me confirm her birth date from Dr. Peter Bundgard’s research. He has done extensive research on the Hicks family.

24 FEB 1942 - Passed away at the age of 87 from cerebral apoplexy [Lufkin, Angelina, TX].

From the Lufkin Daily News: Funeral Services for Lufkin Pioneer to be Held Wednesday.

Mrs. Eliza Hicks, 87, resident of Lufkin for the past 39 years, died suddenly today at 8:15 a.m. at the home of her daughter Mrs. J. C. Branan.

Funeral services will be held from the Gipson Funeral chapel Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Revs. Elias Stanley, Monroe Vivion and J. R. Nutt will officiate. Interment will be in the Glendale cemetery.

Pall bearer will be her grandsons. They are Carl Hicks, Dr. Paul Hicks, Dr. C. J. Hicks, Jr., Winfred Talbert, Iverson Branan, Hicks Branan, Claud Hicks and James Hicks.

Mrs. Hicks is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. A. Talbert of Houston and Mrs. J. C. Branan of Lufkin; five sons, Dr. W. E. Hicks of San Augustine, T. C. Hicks of Woodville, Dr. J. L. Hicks of Conroe, Dr. C. J. Hicks of McKinney, V. T. Hicks of Beaumont; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Richardson of Jasper, and Mrs. Mollie Jordan of Spurger; three brothers, Dr. John Ratcliff of Jasper, Joe Ratcliff of Spurger and Jim Ratcliff of Kirbyville; 37 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
