Today, John's maternal 2nd great-grandmother, Ella Middleton Neyland Collier, would have been 165 years old.

23 AUG 1857 - Born in Jasper County, Texas her father, Cornelius “Marcellus” Middleton, was 29 and her mother, Catherine America Carroll Middleton, was 31. She was the second of six children. She had one older brother, David Arthur. 

It might be possible that Catherine had been married before Marcellus as there are two other children listed on the 1860 census but it doesn’t say what their relation is to anyone.

21 JAN 1862 - Birth of brother, John Darotus “Donnie” [Town Bluff, Tyler, TX].


29 SEP 1864 - Birth of sister, Minnie F. [Jasper Co., TX].


21 MAY 1865 - Birth of sister, Kathryn Virginia “Kate” [Jasper Co., TX]. I have found different information on her birthdate. Some census say 1866. 


21 MAR 1868 - Birth of sister, Nettie T. [Jasper, Jasper, TX].


1870 - Residence - Subdivision 23, Jasper, TX.



14 JAN 1876 - Married Richard Arthur Neyland in Jasper, Texas when she was 18 and he was 21.


1880 - Residence - Can’t locate on this census.


12 FEB 1880 - Birth of son, Arthur B. [Tyler County, TX].


14 JUL 1882 - Birth of daughter, Bertha America [TX]. This was John’s great-grandmother.


26 JUL 1882 - Death of her husband, Richard, at the age of 28 [Orange, Orange, TX]. They had been married for six years.


25 SEP 1885 - Death of son, Arthur B. [Tyler County, TX].


1891 - Death of her father, Marcellus, at the age of 63 [Jasper County, TX].


2 JAN 1892 - Death of mother, Catherine America, at the age of 63 [Tyler County, TX].


21 JAN 1894 - Married Thomas John “Tom” Collier, in Tyler, Smith, TX when she was 36 and he was 73.


19 JAN 1900 - Death of husband, Thomas John “Tom” Collier, at the age of 79. They had been married five years. [Town Bluff, Tyler, TX].


1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 5, Tyler, TX. (Said she had one living child but the mother of 3).



1910 - Residence - San Augustine, San Augustine, TX. (Said 4 children born/3 living)



1920 - Residence - San Augustine, San Augustine, TX.



15 SEP 1925 - Passed away at the age of 68 [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].


Burial - San Augustine City Cemetery, San Augustine, San Augustine, TX.

Woodville Woodville is where the Hicks family held a reunion for many years. SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling.
