Today John’s maternal great-grandmother, Bertha America Neyland, would have been 140. 

14 JUL 1882 - Born in Texas, her father, Richard, was 28 and her mother, Ella, was 24. She was an only child. I would imagine that she was born in Orange, TX since her parents lived there but I have no documentation to back that up.*


*Correction - in researching her mother, Ella, further I have discovered that Bertha had an older brother named Arthur.


26 JUL 1882 - Death of father, Richard [Orange, Orange, TX] when she was just 12 days old.


25 SEP 1885 - Death of brother, Arthur B. [Tyler County, TX].


1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 5, Tyler, TX.



3 SEP 1901 - Married William Edger Hicks, when she was 19 and he was 26 in Tyler, TX.


10 JUL 1902 - Birth of daughter, Ella Faye [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].


2 SEP 1904 - Birth of daughter, Mae Elizabeth [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].


24 AUG 1906 - Birth of son, Richard Jewel [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].


21 NOV 1908 - Birth of son, John Thomas [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].


1910 - Residence - San Augustine, San Augustine, TX.



14 AUG 1914 - Birth of son, James Leon [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].


15 OCT 1915 - Birth of son, William Carl [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].

27 JAN 1958 - Death of son, John Thomas, at the age of 49 [Jacksonville, Cherokee, TX].


8 AUG 1963 - Death of husband, William Edgar, at the age of 88 [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX]. They had been married 61 years.


2 JUL 1972 - Passed away from a cerebral vascular accident and severe arteriosclerosis at the age of 89 [San Augustine, San Augustine, TX].
