Today my paternal great grandmother, Hettie Lou Goodwin Owens was born in Colbert, AL, to Sarah Caroline Denton, age 33, and Robert Smith Goodwin, age 40. She was the ninth of thirteen children. William Henry, Emerline Emma, George Walter, Nancy Ann, John Leander, Annie Jane, Ella Rose and James Riley were born before her.

9 APR 1888 - Colbert, AL.


31 MAR 1890 - Birth of brother, Anderson Robert [Tuscumbia, AL].


2 OCT 1892 - Birth of sister, Sallie Lola [AL].


26 FEB 1895 - Birth of brother, Charlie Lewis [Hunt County, TX].


22 JUN 1897 - Birth of sister, Bertha Thelma [Hunt County, TX].

1900 - Residence - Justice Precinct 6, Hunt, TX.




22 DEC 1907 - Married Andrew Crawford Owens in Scatterbranch Community, Hunt, TX, in a buggy, in the rain. She was 19 and he was 20.



22 SEP 1908 - Birth of son, Rayford Morris [Hunt, TX].


4 MAY 1910 - Birth of son, Cecil Robert [Commerce, TX].

18 MAY 1910 - Death of mother, Sarah Caroline Denton Goodwin passed away in Wolfe City, Texas, at the age of 55.

1910 - Residence - Justice Precinct 6, Hunt, TX.



2 OCT 1911 - Birth of son, Wayne Denton [Hunt, TX]. This is my grandfather.

16 DEC 1918 - Birth of son, Paul James [TX].

15 AUG 1920 - Death of son, Paul James passed away when he was 1 year old.

1920 - Residence - Commerce, Hunt, TX.



15 APR 1921 - Birth of son, Thomas Ralph [Commerce, TX].

9 OCT 1923 - Birth of daughter, Ruth Isabel [Hunt, TX].


8 SEP 1926 - Birth of son, Carl Gene [Abernathy, TX].



7 AUG 1928 - Death of father, Robert Smith Goodwin passed away at the age of 80.

1930 - Residence - Precinct 1, Swisher, TX.

Between the 1940 census and her death they moved to Missouri. I’m not sure why they made this move.


5 FEB 1945 - Passed away in South West City, Missouri, when she was 56 years old from coronary occlusion. They had been married 37 years.

Woodville Woodville is where the Hicks family held a reunion for many years. Located about an hour from Lufkin, it is located deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas at the crossroads of three U.S. highways: U.S. Highway 69, U.S. Highway 190, and U.S. 287. SUSAN TAYLOR DEFRIESE WATT 1821 - 1890

On January 8th, my paternal 3rd great-grandmother, Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt(s) Owens , would have been 202 years old. She has been a little difficult to research as her maiden name is spelled several different ways like Dumfriese, Defrice and DeFrees. Also there is some discrepancy on whether her first husband’s last name was Watt or Watts. I recently received information from Roberta Mahr Drews , who is my 1st cousin 1x removed. Her mother, Ruth Owens Mahr , my grandaunt, received some of this information and some of it came from Carl Owens , who was my granduncle. He had written to some relatives and got some information. October 30, 2022 Happy 108th birthday to my paternal grandmother, Kathryne Viola Smith Owens . My middle name is Kathryne in her honor. It is a interesting spelling.
