ANDREW THOMAS OWENS 1857 - 1935

March 15, 2022

Today my paternal 2nd great-grandfather, Andrew Thomas Owens, would have been 165 years old.

15 MAR 1857 - Born in Cedar Bluff, AL, to Andrew Campbell Owens and Susan Taylor DeFriese Watt Owens. He was the eighth of ten children. The siblings born before him were a half-brother William D Watt, Hinda, Laura S Dean, Lidia, Florida, Florence and Alfarata.

There are a lot of questions about his family growing up.  On our Facebook Group for the Owens family the following information has been discussed.

Cindi Owens Argumaniz:  “When Daddy [Carl Owens] started trying to get information back in the '60s he found that Martha Louisiana Raines had been married and widowed before she married Andrew Camel/Campbell. Stuff like that also provides "challenges." I believe Susan T. DeFriese's ancestors were Huguenot and had to flee France or be killed.”

Cindi also stated “Andrew Thomas was born a Watt but was adopted by an Owens and Hiram DeFriese was also adopted.”

Roberta Drews: “In Joyce Owens Gabriel’s family history, she includes a letter from Naomi Owens Trammell that says, “It is true that Grandma (Martha Louisiana Raines) was part Indian. Chris and I believe it was on her father’s side.” Naomi was (is?) the daughter of Henry Grady Owens.”

Cindi: “Roberta yes, Naomi and Christine were Uncle Grady's daughters with his first wife. He and Aunt Florine had a son but I can't remember his name. We would go visit Christine and her family whenever we could in Houston. Her husband had lost his right arm in WWll and he would fascinate us kids tying his shoes and stuff like that.”

Roberta: “Cindi, in Joyce’s history she has a letter your dad got from Holmes Webb saying that Susan DeFriese was first married to Seaborn Watt who died in 1841. She then married Andrew Owens in Talladega AL in 1847. Andrew Thomas Owens was the first son of Andrew Camel Owens and Susan DeFriese so I don’t think he was adopted.”

Cindi: “There was something either in Ancestry or FamilySearch that had him originally as a Watt. I'll look into it again. I do know that Hiram DeFriese was adopted because he was 6 or 7 when his mother married... I think to Asher DeFriese. It's likely I have the names confused, I've been looking at a lot of info lately. I also wondered if Susan's maiden name was Taylor. That's what I saw listed as her middle name.”

All of this to say that my research is ongoing and a lot of questions still need to be answered so I'm not 100% yet
