August 23, 2022 Today, John's maternal 2nd great-grandmother, Ella Middleton Neyland Collier , would have been 165 years old. 23 AUG 1857 - Born in Jasper County, Texas her father, Cornelius “Marcellus” Middleton , was 29 and her mother, Catherine America Carroll Middleton, was 31. She was the second of six children. She had one older brother, David Arthur.  It might be possible that Catherine had been married before Marcellus as there are two other children listed on the 1860 census but it doesn’t say what their relation is to anyone. 1860 - Residence - Jasper, TX. 21 JAN 1862 - Birth of brother, John Darotus “Donnie ” [Town Bluff, Tyler, TX]. 29 SEP 1864 - Birth of sister, Minnie F. [Jasper Co., TX]. 21 MAY 1865 - Birth of sister, Kathryn Virginia “Kate” [Jasper Co., TX]. I have found different information on her birthdate. Some census say 1866.  21 MAR 1868 - Birth of sister, Nettie T. [Jasper, Jasper, TX]. 1870 - Residence - Subdivision 23, Jasper, TX. 14 JAN 18...

We lived 15 minutes away so we saw them a lot. My grandfather had a good sense of humor. On summer nights we would sit out in the backyard and look up at the stars. He would share with me about Astronomy and would give me pointers in my softball pitching in that same backyard. He loved baseball and I recall him listening to the Astros' game on the radio at night. I also remember that he liked to cook gumbo and always told me to study computers as they were going to be important in the future. I wished he would have told me more about his childhood growing up in Shiner, about his parents and his time in the military. I only have recollection of going to Shiner once and him showing us where he lived but o...
